The Second Global was recently held in Beijing, (China). The event was organsied by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE).
The aim of this event was to prompt international cooperation to creatively address some of the most pressing issues of the time: the Grand Challenges for Engineering—including carbon sequestration, cybersecurity, health care, innovations in infrastructure, and education of the engineers who will take on such challenges. This GGCS was the second in a series inspired by the NAE, 14 ambitious goals identified by some of this generation’s leading technological thinkers and doers that are believed to be both achievable and necessary to help people and the planet survive. The held in London in 2013, started the conversation about ways to meet these challenges.
The School of Engineering (SOE) at Taylor's University was the first outside the University States of America (USA) to commit to meeting the Grand Challenges for Engineering. As a result, Taylor's University was invited to select three SOE students to attend the 2nd Global Grand Challenges Summit in Beijing (China). The three students, Toh Khai Liang, Heng Jing Lei and Mohamed El Sabaa were also all sponsored by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to attend this event and they were accompanied by Associate Professor Ir Dr Satesh Namasivayam, the Deputy Dean of Taylor’s School of Engineering.
The aim of the event was to prompt international cooperation to creatively address some of the most pressing issues of the time. The students had the opportunity to meet other Grand Challenge scholars and listen to some of the outstanding research work being done in these fields. The Assoc Dean Int'l (ADI) for SOE Dr. Veena A Doshi said that "this was a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet with other students and hear about some of the innovative and cutting edge research that is being done".
