A Mission To Discover His Life’s Purpose

Ervin Chai, Bachelor of Software Engineering (HONS)

To many, Ervin looks like a Mass Communication student. With his charming wit, outgoing personality and friendly demeanor, it’s no wonder his friends from other faculties are surprised to find Ervin an engineering student.

Since childhood, communication is something Ervin never struggled with but yet, like many areas in life, there is always room to grow. Through a series of experiential learning activities like Life Skills, Ervin learned to deal with others more tactfully, with his heart and not his head.

“Especially in a class about cultural diversity,” Ervin said. “I realised what I thought was okay for me is not okay for others. It’s all about being sensitive towards one another and understanding each other’s culture.”

The nineteen-year-old chose to pursue a Software Engineering course at Taylor’s because he would like to improve the world through the use of technology. What he is uncertain of is the how, when, why, what and where.

Even so, that does not mean that he already has life all figured out.

“I’ve always felt lost like I don’t know what my purpose in life is,” Ervin admitted. “In Life Skills, I was taught to discover who I am by learning my own values. We then learn to develop our values, identity, core purpose and methods on how to reach towards our goals. That is how we find our purpose,” Ervin added.

“Yes, I may not have found my aim in life yet but Life Skills has taught me how to get there and I know I will eventually find my way."
