Sharing Experiences and Ideas: Taylor’s Global Mobility Office Visits International Student Exchange Centre at University of Malaya
The University of Malaya has been amongst the most progressive public universities in Malaysia when it comes to increasing international student exchange. The Global Mobility Office exchange team at Taylor’s University organised a day to share experiences and benchmark best practice with colleagues.

As Taylor’s University looks to expand the number of our students who participate in an international exchange, we regularly engage with other universities to learn about what works, and what does not. The Taylor’s Global Mobility Office recently organised a knowledge-sharing and benchmarking visit to the International Student Centre at the University of Malaya (UM). The focus of this visit was to share and compare best-practices when it comes to developing systems, process and operations to improve the exchange student experience.
Led by Ms Jayvien Lau, the Head of Student Exchange, the Taylor’s team was given a very warm welcome by Mdm. Salmi Marsita Shaari, Director, Mdm Vigneshree King, Senior Assistant Registrar, and Mdm Junaidah Jamauddin, the Senior Assistant Registrar of the International Student Centre at UM. “This was a great opportunity for us to learn from the University of Malaya, as they are already hosting about 700 incoming exchange students annually,” said Ms Lau, pointing out that UM was also one of the first public universities to adopt the self-application system for student pass/visa through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). At the same time, Ms Lau said that she was interested to learn more about the processes and support for outbound student exchange, especially when it comes to issue of engaging with faculty members and the challenges of module mapping.
“Given the introduction of the new curriculum framework, we are looking to ramp up our student exchange numbers to similar levels that UM is operating at” said Jayvien Lau, adding that this was “a very fruitful platform for knowledge sharing and to foster greater network with what has been a pioneering Malaysian university in terms of its development of student exchange and mobility – and we look forward to welcoming them to the Lakeside campus”.
